Mandate

This project aimed to create a book about the art in the metro system of Montreal and the artists who created them.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM), the third-largest public transit organization in North America, is a steward of public art. The Montréal métro system is often called an underground art gallery, with its 68 stations adorned by murals, stained glass panels, and sculptures in a variety of vibrant styles. This remarkable collection reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage and artistic innovation.

What inspired my approach to this project was the chronological aspect of the artworks' creation. I chose to organize the book around this timeline, making it intuitive for readers to place each piece within its historical and spatial context. Additionally, I incorporated the concept of connections between métro lines as a recurring graphic element for the chapter dividers, symbolizing continuity and the interconnectedness of the network.
